What is Information Assurance?
  • Information Assurance encompasses those “operations that protect and defend information and information systems by ensuring their availability, integrity, authentication, confidentiality, and nonrepudiation. This includes providing for restoration of information systems by incorporating protection, detection, and reaction capabilities.” IA issues are prevalent in business and government agencies today, especially since 9/11. All members of an information organization, in any business, need to have a solid understanding of the information assurance issues. Information Assurance is an increasingly important requirement for Information Technology professionals and for those who process or deal with information in any of its aspects.

What is Information Assurance at Mesa Community College?
  • In the interest of serving the community of information users and managers in the Phoenix area, MCC's Business & Industry Institute has developed
    1. A Certificate Program in Network Security;
    2. A Certificate Program in Information Assurance;
    3. An AAS Degree Program in Information Assurance;
    4. A state of the art Certificate Program in Cyber Forensics is being developed for approval later this year
    As an authorized training partner with SCP and Sun Microsystems, we provide any student with a solid education in Information Assurance concepts. The shortage of qualified people in the IA workforce provides individuals enrolling in the IA program now an opportunity to get in on the ground floor.

Employment Statistics and Job Awareness
  • The relatively new position of "security analyst", also known as "security administrator", is critical to a company’s well-being and can potentially prevent losses of millions in corporate dollars. This tech professional is the protection agent against hackers and intruders seeking to harm an organization’s computer network and/or files. The level of responsibility and daily duties varies depending upon the size of the company and industry. With only 3,000 CISSPs extant nationwide, the market is wide open. Average salaries for entry-level positions start at $54,090 and go up to $75,043 with 6-9 years of experience. ZDNet noted in a report from the SANS Institute (July, 2002) "...among the 1,214 security and system administration professionals who responded to the survey, the average salary hit a healthy $69,340 with an average bonus of 14.5 percent of base salary."
